Historically there were a number of splits in liberalism, especially as it came to evolve between American, British and French political traditions over the last two hundred years. Mill, Tocqueville and other classical liberals encouraged, supported, and condoned colonialism and imperialism on these grounds, while a minority of social liberals, belatedly, expressed regret over these actions, although others agreed and supported imperialism for the same reasons as classical liberalism did.
The Revolutionaries were set on building a Republic that could govern a large area of land, and be representative of the same, nullifying and usurping the claims of the kingdom and The Church in the minds of the people.
